Message II - Drawing by Gerhard Juchum

MESSAGE II

The envisioned sculpture is an integration of JOY OF EFFORT, DAWN OF HUMANITY, THE LOVERS, EVASION OF IDENTITY, ESCAPE, SOLITUDE, and WHY.

The themes for Message II are chosen to express a complexity of human feelings, needs, problems, and desires.

Joy of Effort II - Sculpture by Gerhard Juchum
Joy of Effort II
In JOY OF EFFORT II, I try to express some of the problems we face living in our modern society. I attempt to indicate the origin of alienation, loss of self-identity and frustration and then I suggest ways of overcoming these problems.

JOY OF EFFORT is a timeless, universal theme. In this section of the group sculpture I illustrate my conviction that without an investment of honest effort there is no valid and lasting achievement or fulfilment. Effort is a great potential source of happiness, whether the effort is physical or mental.

Anguish - Sculpture by Gerhard Juchum
Anguish
The sculpture will also contain themes about becoming aware of one's individuality, such as DAWN OF HUMANITY, ANGUISH, STRUGGLE FOR IDENTITY II, SOLITUDE, and BALANCE. As soon as someone searches for and finds an identity, she or he will never give it up. If one expresses one's individuality, many personal problems and many problems of society will rapidly be resolved.

I believe the lack of development of individuality will lead to alienation (scattered parts of bodies) guilt, frustration, depression, fear, loneliness and confusion. If we violate or evade this development we remain passive, inert, manipulated, exploited and so on. If we struggle for identity we will have to face anguish at the beginning or dawn of our effort before we can bask in the daylight of genuine love.

Solitude - Sculptor Gerhard Juchum
Solitude
"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood...
"Everyone has duties to the community in which alone the free and full development of his personality is possible." (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, United Nations, 1948.)

Most human beings have felt a sense that something is wrong with our way of life but very few really know who or what is right.

I believe the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the most important statement to be realized by the United Nations, each country, and by each individual in any country. We need to create a National and International Committee for Human Rights, which is able to act promptly against any human rights violation. Everyone needs to be able to get in touch with members of this organization at any time by dialing 1111 anywhere on this planet or by writing to P.O. Box 1111 in any community. It needs to be known without doubt that constructive action will be taken against the violators.

Most human beings are endowed with reason and conscience and will interact with fellow beings in a spirit of kinship, if their spirit is not broken.

Solitude - Sculptor Gerhard Juchum
Solitude
Despite the fact that most societies today make a free and full development of a human being's personality impossible, societies even prepare to make basic survival impossible for others - our duty still is to contribute to the purpose of our society which is universal welfare.

The desire to sustain and elevate one's life, to develop a sound mind and body, and to perfect oneself is not egotistical but is a noble endeavour which can be of benefit to oneself and others. By means of this struggle love develops. We become considerate toward others for we gain insight into our common dependency and we find ways for mutual satisfaction in harmony.

Is rushing for eight hours a day, creating problems and tensions for the sake of our so-called career being adult? After-hours we are exhausted and incapable of communicating with ourselves, our friends, or our families. We therefore turn off our senses and our ability to care deeply about anything and turn on the television. We become unreceptive to gentle warmth and radiance because we are always on the go never pausing to ask if we want to continue speeding through life. As restless ghosts of ourselves, busy rushing past ourselves - we fail to encounter ourselves and others.
