ESSENCE AND FORM

There is much more to my art than just a figure sculpted in the nude. Much more than the hard labour and the intense metamorphosis which takes place in my mind. My art constitutes a subtle moral legislation. The varied languages of my sculptures express harmonious moral ideas. My art's genial and eloquent statements are meant to be felt immediately by a receptive onlooker.

Moral philosophy is being communicated through beautiful and pleasurable form. The sculptures ask the mind for approval. My art tries to have a positive impact on the feeling and imagination of those who see it. Through my art I try to separate truth from error, the beautiful from the plain, the good from the bad. My art seeks to reveal a profound and compelling realm of deeper, transcendental being.

I am greatly in favour of teaching art to children during their impressionable years. My only hope is that this will be done by competent art teachers, who will instill the notion and realization that the human being in a cared for environment is the centre of our daily life.


I made a sculpture in and for a school. I wanted the children to become capable of appreciating and understanding that art and life do not exist apart from each other. Art is not made for the elite.

If a child's parents never express enthusiasm about a flowering plant, the child may learn not to take any notice of it. A mother and a father have a profound influence by sharing their feelings and interests. Vibrations, which surface in later life, are transferred to our children's unconscious. We are responsible, for we imprint on their early childhood.

My creation comes from appreciation of life. Art is all around us if only we are willing to see. Daily routine and our harshness in going about our lives make us mentally blind. If you want to learn how to model a figure, then you must first learn how to look with care. Art helps you regard and remember things which interest you. The more able you are to mentally reconstruct what you have seen, the better you will be able to create a work of art. Taking your time and carefully observing nature are great steps toward appreciation and understanding.

When we can see a leaf, a rock, a shoulder, a smile, as if it represents the world, the doors open for us to enter realms of unimaginable beauty and truth. We have then come close to the centre of all being.

Look - a dogwood bud! As a form not very significant but imagine the beautiful blossom and the next dogwood tree, all out of this bud. We can appreciate the tiny bud of a plant when we realize that it holds the promise of a future tree. Never should we dislike or reduce something because we see it out of context with the whole. If you capture the essence and significance of this bud in a sculpture, you have created a masterpiece.

Anyone is capable of recognizing beauty or its absence. One only need to take time to observe and reflect. Just look at trees bending under the force of the wind, the waves in the ocean, the way someone moves, or even the expression in a hitchhiker's thumb.

Look - a fisherman hauling in a net! To sculpt him means becoming familiar with his working conditions, his skill and strength, the expression on his face during and after labour, his dirty work clothes, his sweat, his opinions and feelings about being a fisherman, his friends, his mate, and everything that is part of him.

All impressions enter the unconscious, although only the conscious ones seem to guide my work. All impressions are needed to start this sculpture.

I am unhappy and depressed sometimes for days but then I come to realize that again I tried hard and captured at least in part this fisherman hauling in a net.
